The number of newly-laid off employees seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to 457,000. The number was less than expected and marked the fifth straight week of declines giving hope that the job market is slowly improving. Projections were higher than the actual result, but the closing of unemployment offices for the Thanksgiving day holiday may have delayed some new applications.
