Following on the heels of Ireland’s bail-out announcement comes further speculation that Portugal and even Spain could require similar assistance. While the EU did cobble a package together for Ireland and Greece before that, it is clear that German Chancellor Angela Merkel feels Germany is being forced to shoulder too great a burden to save countries who have been the architects of their own misfortunes.
“We have said that the stability of the euro as a whole must be guaranteed and therefore we will consider the appeal of Ireland positively.”
